Liverpool's captain, Virgil van Dijk, expressed frustration over Lucas Bergvall not receiving a red card before scoring Tottenham's late winner. This incident occurred during the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday. Bergvall netted his goal just four minutes from time, shortly after a contentious tackle on Kostas Tsimikas. The midfielder was already on a yellow card at that point.
Arne Slot's team had to play with ten men while Tsimikas received medical attention. Meanwhile, Bergvall capitalised on Dominic Solanke's pass to score his first goal for Spurs. This gave Ange Postecoglou's side a narrow 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg at Anfield. Van Dijk was visibly upset about the referee's decision regarding Bergvall.

"I think it was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow," Van Dijk told Sky Sports. "Obviously I think it was pretty clear [what I said to the referee]. It was no coincidence that a minute later he scored the winner, but it is what it is."
Van Dijk further criticised the officiating team, including VAR, for not issuing a second yellow card to Bergvall. He stated, "The referee made a mistake, in my opinion, and I told him that." He emphasised that everyone on the sidelines recognised it should have been a yellow card.
Despite this setback, Liverpool remains hopeful for the return leg at Anfield next month. The defending champions have successfully advanced from seven of their last nine EFL Cup semi-final appearances. Slot remains optimistic about his team's chances despite the narrow lead.
Wednesday’s loss at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium marked only Liverpool’s second defeat in their last 20 matches in this competition. Their previous loss came against Manchester City in a 3-2 defeat during the 2022-23 fourth round. Van Dijk acknowledged that while this decision wasn't solely why they lost, it significantly impacted the game.
Liverpool will aim to overturn this deficit when they host Tottenham in the second leg. With their strong track record in past semi-finals, they are determined to make another comeback and reach the final once again.
