During a Nations League match, Virgil van Dijk praised Hungary for continuing to play after assistant coach Adam Szalai experienced a medical emergency. The game at Johan Cruijff ArenA was paused for 13 minutes as Szalai received treatment on the field. Staff and substitutes formed a protective circle around him. Szalai, 36, was later taken to Amsterdam Hospital and shared on social media that he was recovering well.
Despite the incident, Hungary chose to resume the match, which ended in a 4-0 victory for the Netherlands. This win secured their spot in the Nations League quarter-finals. In the first half, Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo scored from penalties. After halftime, Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners added to the scoreline, helping the Oranje finish second in Group A3.

Van Dijk expressed admiration for Hungary's decision to continue playing after such a distressing event. He told NOS, "That was quite a shock, of course. You see someone lying down, you see someone shaking. That is quite scary." He added that it was reassuring when Szalai's condition stabilized and hoped for his swift recovery.
He continued by acknowledging Hungary's resilience: "They had to decide whether they wanted to continue playing. I think it shows a lot of strength that they did carry on. I have a lot of respect for that." Van Dijk also commented on his team's performance, noting that despite challenging conditions, they deserved their win.
Reflecting on the match, Van Dijk mentioned that although the pitch was fast and conditions were not ideal, these were not excuses for any sloppy play. He emphasized that winning and keeping a clean sheet were crucial outcomes of the game.
The Netherlands' victory not only advanced them to the quarter-finals but also highlighted their ability to maintain focus under unexpected circumstances. The team's determination was evident as they managed to secure a clean sheet while achieving their goals in Group A3.
