Van Nistelrooy Emphasises Need For Improvements Following Leicester City’s Opening Win Against West Ham

Despite a 3-1 victory over West Ham, Ruud van Nistelrooy highlights the need for Leicester City to improve their performance in the Premier League. The team faced significant challenges and must adapt to compete effectively.

Leicester City began a new era under Ruud van Nistelrooy with a 3-1 victory over West Ham. Jamie Vardy scored early, setting the tone for Van Nistelrooy's debut match. Bilal El Khannouss and Patson Daka added to the scoreline, while Niclas Fullkrug netted a late consolation for West Ham. Despite the win, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged the need for improvement in the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy admitted that Leicester must enhance their performance to compete effectively. "We know the Premier League is brutal," he stated. He emphasised the importance of adapting to new strategies, including a compact 4-4-2 formation. The team needs to maintain possession consistently to avoid being outplayed by opponents.

Van Nistelrooy Calls for Improvements After Win

West Ham dominated much of the game, recording 31 shots, their highest in a Premier League match since Opta began tracking data in 2003-04. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 3.09, highlighting their inefficiency in front of goal. Van Nistelrooy recognised these challenges as part of his mission to keep Leicester competitive.

Julen Lopetegui, West Ham's manager, expressed frustration after his team's numerous missed chances. "It's frustrating because I think we deserved much more," he said. Despite creating many opportunities, West Ham only converted one shot into a goal, leaving Lopetegui disappointed with the outcome.

Van Nistelrooy noted that Leicester must improve long-term performances despite securing three points against West Ham. He stressed the need for persistence and better execution in future matches to ensure success in the demanding league environment.

Lopetegui remained hopeful about future games despite his disappointment. He urged his players to learn from this experience and focus on upcoming challenges. "They [the players] want to win for them, for me, for the club," he remarked, highlighting their determination to succeed.

The victory was significant for Van Nistelrooy as he embarked on his managerial journey in England's top flight. However, he is aware of the tough road ahead and is committed to refining Leicester's gameplay to meet Premier League standards effectively.
