Robin van Persie's coaching debut ended in a 1-0 defeat as Heerenveen lost to Ajax in the opening game of the new Eredivisie season. Van Persie, who previously managed at Feyenoord's academy, saw his team unable to recover from Kristian Hlynsson's goal just before half-time.
Van Persie reflected on the match, stating, "Based on the entire match, there might have been more in it." He noted that his team had a few chances in the first half and hoped one would go in to boost their confidence. However, they failed to create significant opportunities in the second half.
Despite managing seven shots on target, Heerenveen's expected goals (xG) stood at 0.39. Van Persie believed his side deserved something from the encounter. "We had hoped that one of them would have gone in and created a bit more belief," he said.

With a week to prepare for their first home game against Utrecht on August 17, Van Persie is focused on improving his team's performance. "We are going to face FC Utrecht next week in high spirits," he added.
Van Persie emphasised the importance of maintaining intensity and quality in their play. "With this way of playing, I cannot promise that we will win every match, but in terms of intensity and sometimes also quality, this is football as I think you should play it," he stated.
The former Manchester United striker remains optimistic about his team's potential. "We will show that every week," he concluded.
Van Persie's debut may not have gone as planned, but he remains committed to developing his team's style and approach. The upcoming match against Utrecht will be an opportunity for Heerenveen to bounce back and secure their first win of the season.
