VAR Reliance By Referees Questioned After Newcastle United's FA Cup Win At Villa

Eddie Howe questioned referees' reliance on VAR after Newcastle United's 3-1 FA Cup victory at Aston Villa, highlighting key decisions and the impact of VAR's absence. The match featured a red card for Marco Bizot and disputed calls on offside and handball, underscoring calls for clearer officiating.

Eddie Howe questioned how match officials now use VAR after Newcastle United’s 3-1 FA Cup victory at Aston Villa, saying the absence of technology at Villa Park exposed several mistakes, even though Newcastle overturned a half-time deficit with an impressive second-half response.

The tie highlighted the FA Cup rule that VAR is only introduced from the fifth round. Aston Villa’s opening goal from Tammy Abraham appeared offside, while Newcastle also felt key calls on cards and handball went against them before Sandro Tonali and Nick Woltemade completed the comeback.

VAR reliance questioned after Newcastle win

Howe accepted that officials act in good faith but felt the lack of video support hurt Newcastle during crucial moments. "Obviously, we've got the benefit of replays on the bench, and you can see what's right and what's wrong, and we agreed in that first period that every decision was going against us. The officials don't make any decision on purpose, it's just what they think at the time, but without VAR, I thought there were a lot of errors today. Once the decision is made and it seems like there is no way back, there's nothing you can do. You've got to move on quite quickly, although all through that half, it seemed like I was debating a referee decision. That's not me, I don't do that, but I felt there were so many going against us. Today, it makes sense why VAR is necessary. To help the referees."

The turning point arrived just before half-time when Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot received a straight red card. Bizot charged out and brought down Jacob Murphy outside the area, leaving Chris Kavanagh with a straightforward dismissal, which changed the game’s balance after Villa had controlled long spells of the opening period.

Team Scorer Minute Incident type
Aston Villa Tammy Abraham First half Goal, allowed despite offside
Aston Villa Marco Bizot 45th minute Straight red card
Newcastle United Sandro Tonali Second half Two goals
Newcastle United Nick Woltemade Second half One goal

Newcastle’s frustration started with Abraham’s opener, when the striker stood clearly beyond the defence before scoring. With no VAR available, the assistant’s missed flag allowed the goal. Lucas Digne then avoided a red card for an earlier challenge and later was not penalised for a handball in the area, despite strong Newcastle appeals.

Howe later addressed whether technology was changing how referees operate when VAR is present. "I think there's an argument to say yes. Because when VAR's there, there's always a sense of, 'Well, I won't give that, but let's check it.' I think then your decision-making maybe isn't as sharp as it may normally have to be, so maybe there's a difference there. I'm always torn on VAR. That emotion, that joy that you get in that moment, I still really love, and VAR takes it away. But then, on the other side, I was wishing there was VAR on the first goal against us and probably throughout that game."

VAR and Newcastle vs Aston Villa FA Cup managers’ reactions

While Howe focused on officiating and VAR, the Newcastle head coach also admitted the tie forced constant dialogue with the referee, which felt unusual. Howe suggested decisions repeatedly went against Newcastle in the first half, yet stressed that the group had to reset at half-time, then used the red card advantage to press higher and attack more directly.

Unai Emery accepted that Bizot’s dismissal transformed the contest, although the Aston Villa head coach also pointed to useful lessons. "The players competed fantastically, but after we had the red card it became more difficult in the second half," Emery said. "We tried but it was not enough. Newcastle is a really fantastic team, and they are contenders in this competition. I think we must analyse this match and feel like we're improving. Today, we're not happy, but I saw some things in the squad that can help us for the future in the Europa League and the Premier League."

The match left Newcastle in the FA Cup’s next round and Villa reflecting on selection changes and fine margins. Howe’s comments underlined continuing debate around VAR’s role in English football, while both managers highlighted how one decision, such as Bizot’s red card, can reshape a knockout tie despite strong periods of play from each side.
