Aston Villa Aims To Be Regular Contenders Under Unai Emery After Europa League Triumph
Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for a trophy by beating Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final, and Unai Emery immediately set a fresh target, insisting the club must now become regular challengers for silverware and secure a lasting place among the Premier League’s top seven teams.
The victory in Istanbul gave Villa a first major European title since the 1982 European Cup success. Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia struck with powerful first-half goals, then Morgan Rogers added a third after half-time, completing a dominant display that ranks among the competition’s most one-sided showpieces.

Emery described how the club’s domestic task remains demanding, noting that Villa were not widely expected to feature among the Premier League’s leading group this season. Villa have now broken into that bracket, but Emery stressed that staying there over several campaigns will decide whether the team are seen as consistent contenders for honours in England and Europe.
"It's a huge challenge we have in the Premier League. Why? In the beginning, we are not contenders for top seven, Emery said. There are seven top teams. There's the top six, and Newcastle are seventh. And we are trying to get there, to be consistent there. We are achieving it. But of course, to keep doing it is our challenge. And then, by being there, we are in Europe."
Villa’s European success capped a league season that started poorly. The team failed to win any of the first five Premier League fixtures and did not score in the opening four matches. Despite that, Emery guided Villa to a top-five finish, which guaranteed Champions League qualification for next season ahead of the Freiburg showdown.
The Freiburg win earned Emery a fifth Europa League crown, making Emery only the second coach to capture the same European competition five times, following Carlo Ancelotti’s five Champions League triumphs. Opta also highlighted that Emery now shares the record for most major European final victories with Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Giovanni Trapattoni.
Villa’s 3-0 scoreline stands just below the heaviest wins recorded in UEFA Cup or Europa League finals, or in two-legged finals where one leg produced a larger winning margin. Only Borussia Monchengladbach, Real Madrid and Sevilla have posted bigger single-match advantages in the competition’s showpiece occasions.
| Year | Fixture | Result | Winning margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1975 | Borussia Monchengladbach vs Twente | Second leg: 5-1 | 4 goals |
| 1986 | Real Madrid vs Koln | First leg: 5-1 | 4 goals |
| 2006 | Sevilla vs Middlesbrough | Final: 4-0 | 4 goals |
| 2026 | Aston Villa vs Freiburg | Final: 3-0 | 3 goals |
Unai Emery and Aston Villa using recent setbacks as European motivation
The triumph followed a campaign in which Villa had fallen short in knockout competitions. Last season, Villa exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage against Paris Saint-Germain and lost in the FA Cup semi-finals to Crystal Palace. Emery believes those disappointments gave the squad valuable knowledge for this latest run.
By getting this trophy we are adding experiences for us, and those experiences for the players are important, he added. We can also play next year trying again to be in contention for trophies. Last year, with the FA Cup and Champions League semis and quarter-finals, we lostbut it was experience for us. We lost those matches because we deserved to, we didn't deserve more against Crystal Palace. Today, I was ready to win, I was ready to lose. Of course, winning is better!
Support from the stands in Istanbul included a notable visitor. William, Prince of Wales, joined a large Aston Villa following and later focused on an absent squad member. Boubacar Kamara, who suffered a serious knee injury in January, missed the rest of the season after a second major problem in two years.
Amazing night!! Huge congratulations to all the players, team, staff and everyone connected to the club! 44 years since the last taste of European silverware, William wrote on X. Special shout out to Boubacar Kamara who has been out injured but is such an integral part of our team and helped lay the foundations of this success. UTV!
Emery’s fifth Europa League victory, Villa’s first trophy since the 1995-96 EFL Cup and a confirmed Champions League place underline the club’s recent progress, yet Emery has made clear that the main task now is to repeat these levels, remain among the Premier League’s top seven and keep challenging for more honours.
