Aston Villa Must Prepare For Anything Despite Leading Champions League Tie Against Club Brugge

Unai Emery stresses that Aston Villa must remain vigilant despite their 3-1 lead over Club Brugge in the Champions League. He highlights the importance of focus and preparation for the second leg.

Aston Villa's manager, Unai Emery, acknowledged the challenges ahead despite their 3-1 advantage over Club Brugge in the Champions League round of 16. Leon Bailey's early goal was equalised by Maxim De Cuyper, but late goals from Brandon Mechele and Marco Asensio secured Villa's lead. Emery stressed that his team must remain vigilant and not assume they've already advanced to the quarter-finals.

Emery emphasised the importance of competing effectively, even if the team didn't play at their best. "Very important. A very tough match. The idea was to compete how much the players showed there," he stated. He acknowledged that while they could have performed better, their competitive spirit helped achieve their target. Emery also highlighted the significance of individual performances, praising Leon Bailey for his contribution.

Villa Prepares for Challenges in Champions League

During the match, Emery displayed visible frustration on the sidelines, resulting in a yellow card. Despite this, he remained focused on maintaining balance within the team. He noted that they had scored more goals against Brugge than in previous encounters with Belgian teams combined. Emery also mentioned the need for readiness for any scenario, including extra time and penalties.

Tyrone Mings received commendation from Emery for his crucial role in defence. Just months after a costly mistake against Brugge in November, Mings redeemed himself with a vital clearance from Hans Vanaken's header. "It is very important getting experiences," Emery remarked about Mings' performance. He stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes and improving continuously.

Emery expressed his expectations for both himself and his players to be demanding and strive for improvement. "We are demanding everyone inside," he said, highlighting the need to analyse games deeply and correct errors. Emery acknowledged that while they corrected some issues from previous matches, further improvements are necessary for their next encounter with Brugge.

Despite their two-goal cushion, Emery remains cautious about underestimating Brugge in the second leg. He reiterated that playing another 90 minutes requires sticking to their game plan and being prepared for all possibilities. His focus remains on ensuring his team stays grounded and ready for any challenges ahead in their Champions League journey.
