Craig Bellamy expressed optimism about the future of his Wales team after their goalless draw against Turkiye in his first match as head coach. Despite missed chances by Aaron Ramsey and Joe Rodon, Bellamy believed his side had scored in the 37th minute when Sorba Thomas lobbed the ball over Mert Gunok, only for it to be ruled offside.
The hosts played with a numerical advantage for nearly half an hour after Baris Alper Yilmaz received a second yellow card for fouling Neco Williams. However, Wales couldn't capitalise on this advantage and have now gone four consecutive international matches without scoring, a streak not seen since 2012. Reflecting on the game, Bellamy praised his team's performance, stating: "The players were outstanding. We have had a lot of work this week. There have been a lot of meetings and I am always conscious of a lot of information going in at the same time. But they were great this week and that gives you confidence."

Bellamy's appointment has reinvigorated Welsh football following their failure to qualify for Euro 2024 under Robert Page. His new high-energy style was evident from the start against Turkiye, who were impressive at the European Championships under Vincenzo Montella earlier this year. Wales posed a threat from set-pieces, with Ramsey narrowly missing with a header and Rodon firing over from a well-executed corner routine.
Turkiye had their moments too, with Yilmaz's penalty appeals being dismissed after a tussle with Rodon in the penalty area. Thomas came close again in the second half, while Harry Wilson's curling shot just missed the far post. Despite these efforts, Bellamy's debut did not yield a win but hinted at potential growth for the team.
Bellamy acknowledged that there is room for improvement: "Believe me, this is the worst we are going to be. The more we learn, the more we spend together, the finer details." He added that he enjoyed his first game despite not being an expert yet: "I am not a master at this after one game, trust me. But I enjoyed it. It was a great country to play against in your first game and I am really happy."
The match also marked an important milestone for young talent Lewis Koumas, who made his home international debut at just 18 years old. This appearance came 15 years and 162 days after his father, Jason Koumas, last played at home for Wales in March 2009 against Finland.
While Bellamy's tenure began without a win, his team's spirited performance suggests promising times ahead for Welsh football under his leadership.
