Watford Football Club has parted ways with head coach Tom Cleverley following their inability to secure a spot in the Championship play-offs. The team ended the season in 14th place, accumulating 57 points, which left them 11 points shy of Bristol City in sixth. Their performance included just one victory in their final nine matches, with two draws and six losses.
The club's sporting director, Gian Luca Nani, expressed optimism about the future, stating, "The time has come for a change and to build on what we believe is a young and talented squad that will have benefited from the experience of the Championship this season." He praised Cleverley's dedication and foresight, acknowledging his contributions to the team.

Cleverley initially stepped into the role as interim head coach in March 2024 after Valerien Ismael's departure. He was confirmed as the permanent head coach a month later. Despite his efforts, Watford concluded their campaign with a five-match winless streak. Their last game was a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday, ending a series of four straight defeats.
During his tenure, Cleverley managed Watford for 59 matches across all competitions. Under his leadership, the team achieved 20 wins, 14 draws, and suffered 25 losses. This resulted in a win rate of 33.9%. His average of 1.24 points per game is notable as it stands as the best since Slaven Bilic's tenure ended in March 2023.
Watford is now on the hunt for their next permanent head coach. This will be their tenth appointment since Nigel Pearson's dismissal in July 2020. The club aims to find someone who can harness the potential of their promising squad and guide them towards better results in future seasons.
Cleverley made history by becoming the first Watford manager to complete an entire season since Javi Garcia did so in the 2018-19 season. Nani expressed confidence in Cleverley's future prospects within football, saying he deserves recognition for his work at Watford and predicting a bright career ahead.
