Watford Secure 2-1 Victory At Bristol City As Ngakia Boosts Play-off Hopes

Watford claim a 2-1 victory away at Bristol City, with Jeremy Ngakia's late strike sealing the win. Scott Twine levelled after Luca Kjerrumgaard's early opener, boosting Watford's play-off push while Bristol City hope to recover strength at home.

Jeremy Ngakia’s late strike secured a 2-1 victory for Watford against Bristol City, lifting Watford above the hosts in the Championship table and strengthening their play-off push. The result also damaged Bristol City’s own top-six ambitions and delivered Ed Still’s first away win since taking charge.

The match ended a long wait for success at Ashton Gate, where Watford had not won since March 2012, and also halted Bristol City’s run of five home league games unbeaten against Watford. Both clubs are chasing the play-off places, so the swing in momentum felt especially significant.

Watford edge Bristol City as Ngakia wins it

Watford started sharply and were rewarded after seven minutes when Luca Kjerrumgaard punished a hesitant Bristol City defence. Edo Kayembe slipped a precise pass into the forward, who fired a powerful effort into the roof of the net from close range, giving goalkeeper Egil Selvik no chance.

Bristol City responded with pressure before the break. The returning Ross McCrorie tested Egil Selvik with a firm drive, while Saba Goglichidze’s awkward free-kick clipped the post. The hosts levelled in the 36th minute, when Adam Randell recycled Tomi Horvat’s half-cleared free-kick and crossed for Scott Twine’s glancing header.

The second half opened in scrappy fashion, with neither side creating many clear chances. Nestory Irankunda volleyed over the bar after a loose ball dropped kindly, and Sinclair Armstrong hit the side netting from a tight angle. The game appeared to drift until Ngakia produced the decisive moment in the 77th minute.

Ngakia collected possession near the edge of the penalty area and curled a superb shot beyond Radel Vitek, who was rooted to the spot. The strike handed Watford all three points, gave Still a first away success, and at the same time dealt another blow to Bristol City’s own play-off prospects.

Overall, chances were limited across the 90 minutes, with both teams recording 11 shots and four efforts on target. Watford created the slightly better openings according to expected goals, posting 0.99 xG compared with Bristol City’s 0.89 xG, which underlined how finely balanced the contest remained.

Team Goals Shots Shots on target Expected goals (xG)
Bristol City 1 11 4 0.89
Watford 2 11 4 0.99

Ngakia’s winning goal came from his only attempt of the game, valued at just 0.04 xG, yet the wing-back influenced play in many areas. Ngakia recorded the joint-most touches in the opposition box with eight, and 64 touches overall, the second-highest tally on the pitch for either team.

Watford’s strong away form continued, with this result meaning only one defeat in their last eight league trips, that loss coming at Southampton. With Bristol City’s home sequence against Watford finally broken, the balance in the race for Championship play-off places shifted slightly towards Still’s side.
