Wayne Rooney Expresses Embarrassment Over Plymouth Argyle's Heavy Defeats In Championship Matches

Wayne Rooney has voiced his embarrassment following Plymouth Argyle's heavy defeats, conceding 10 goals in two games. With the team struggling in the Championship, he acknowledges the need for improvement and greater effort from players.

Wayne Rooney finds himself in a challenging situation as Plymouth Argyle struggles in the Championship. The team has conceded 10 goals over two matches, leaving them winless in four games and just above the relegation zone. Their recent defeats, 6-1 against Norwich City and 4-0 to Bristol City, have significantly impacted their goal difference. Appointed head coach in May, Rooney is under pressure to turn things around quickly.

Rooney acknowledges the criticism he has faced since his teenage years. "I've been criticised since I was a 16-year-old boy, my whole career," he stated to BBC Sport. He admits that currently, they lack the resources to counteract this criticism. Rooney describes this period as possibly the toughest week of his managerial career and emphasises the need for players to show more character and determination.

Rooney Embarrassed by Plymouth's Recent Losses

Plymouth's statistics highlight their struggles this season. They have the lowest expected goals (xG) in the Championship at 12.7 but have managed to score 18 times. However, defensively, they face significant challenges with the highest xG against at 35.8, surpassing Stoke City's 30.8. Plymouth has also conceded the most goals (38) and shots (324), which is 40 more than any other team.

Rooney takes full responsibility for Plymouth's results, acknowledging his role in team selection and tactics. "Ultimately it's my responsibility—I take full responsibility for the results," he said. He believes players must hear from both inside and outside that they need to demonstrate more pride, respect, passion, and fight for the club.

The recent performances have left Rooney feeling embarrassed when facing fans after matches. He stresses that players must understand their need to contribute more on the field. "It's at a point now where the players need to understand that they need to give more," he remarked.

Rooney's focus remains on lifting player morale while finding solutions to improve performance on the pitch. As Plymouth navigates these challenging times, Rooney aims to instil a sense of duty among players towards their club and its supporters.
