Wayne Rooney Departs Plymouth Argyle By Mutual Consent Following Difficult Season
Wayne Rooney has departed from Plymouth Argyle by mutual agreement after a challenging period that saw the club at the bottom of the Championship standings. Rooney, 39, took over in May but managed only four league victories in 23 games. The team has not secured a win in their last nine matches, with fans expressing their displeasure after a 2-0 loss to Oxford United on Sunday. This defeat leaves them four points away from safety as they approach 2025.
Plymouth's performance this season has been concerning. They have faced the most shots (391) and shots on target (141) in the Championship. Additionally, they have the highest expected goals against total (44) and have conceded the most goals (51). Offensively, they have scored only 22 goals, tying with Hull City for the fewest in the second tier.

Rooney expressed gratitude upon his departure: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club," he said. He also extended thanks to all staff members who welcomed him and contributed to making the club special, as well as to players and fans for their efforts and support during his tenure.
In his farewell message, Rooney thanked the Green Army for creating memorable experiences at Home Park. He also acknowledged his coaching staff—Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan—for their expertise and support. "Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart," he stated, adding that he will continue to follow their results with interest.
Looking ahead, first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards are set to lead Plymouth in their upcoming match against Bristol City on New Year's Day.
