Wayne Rooney to retire from international football after 2018 World Cup

London, Aug 30: Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has revealed that he will retire from international football after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The English front-man who turns 31 this year, has earned 115 international caps for the English national side since his debut in 2003. He has scored 53 international goals.

Rooney was named the captain of the national side in 2014 after Steven Gerrard's retirement from international football.

Speaking on his retirement plans, Wayne Rooney said: "Come Russia, I feel that that would be time for me to say goodbye to international football.

"Obviously it is up to Sam, but if that is where my England career comes to an end, it will be after some highs and some lows but as an immensely proud man.

"I started playing international football at 17, so at 32, in two years time, I will have been playing at that level for 15 years and I think that is a good time to finish."

The Man United striker plays in the central midfield for both club and country since last year. His inability to find his form as a front-man has forced the managers to change his position.
