London, Dec 18: Wayne Rooney has told former Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford to work on his attacking play rather than defensive duties in the field.
Rashford started his career as number nine under Louis Van Gaal however in the last two seasons Mourinho has mostly played him as a winger. And since then his goals scoring feet has dried up compared to striking position due to Mourinho's gameplay which demands more defensive attributes like covering the left back positions.
Many people were questioning that if such change of shape of a player could affect his offensive antics but the former United captain, Rooney suggested that his former teammates developing is going very good but urged the player to be more selfish in front of goals to score more rather than trying to feed people to maintain his development.
"Sometimes, early on in my career I was working too hard tracking back and Alex Ferguson sat me down," Rooney explained in an interview with talkSPORT.
"It does affect when you're in the opponents' box. You're a bit leggy. Alex Ferguson told me not to do so much work and be ready for when we get chances.
"I feel with Rashford it's maybe a bit of the same. You see him going back into the full-back areas.
"It's great he's got that enthusiasm but, to get the best out of him going forward, he maybe needs to let the defenders and the midfielders do it."
Rooney ended his 13 years association with Manchester United as club's all-time top scorer and joined his boyhood club, Everton, this summer. The attacker earlier had played with the youngster for last three seasons.
Rashford has scored nine goals and provided six assists in 26 appearances in all competitions this season.
