WC 2014: Protests outside venue during Brazil-Mexico match

Fortaleza (Brazil), June 17: Brazilian police had a confrontation with a small group of anti-World Cup protesters outside the Estádio Castelo here where Brazil took on Mexico in their second match on Tuesday. The police used tear gas and water canons to disperse the protesters who blocked a road to the stadium, a Reuters report said.

At least 10 people were arrested during the demonstration after the protesters tried to block the main street to the stadium, sources in the police said, according to the Reuters report.

Demonstrators, wearing masks, also pelted rocks and hurled sticks at buses bearing logos of the Fifa, football's world body, before riot police moved in to bring the situation under control.

Brazil, which is holding its second World Cup after 64 years, has seen protests against alleged wasteful spending for the football carnival but they haven't turned as ugly as it was feared, particularly after the massive demonstration during a warm-up tournament. Though there have been incidents of protests, but the anti-World cup protests have been turning fade with each passing day, the report added.
