We may need to shop in January transfer window: Bartomeu

Barcelona, November 22: Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has hinted that the club could add reinforcements in January if they have to win the Champions League for the sixth time in their history.

Barca have made an awesome start to the campaign under new boss Ernesto Valverde. They are currently four points clear of second-placed Valencia at the top of the table and ten ahead of defending champions of Real Madrid while they also need only a point to qualify for the next round in Champions League.

Even though, they signed Dortmund star Dembele for a world record fee to replace Neymar, a long-term injury to the French youngster and a dip in form of striker Suarez has made the Barcelona board to look for reinforcements.

Barcelona have shown interest in Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho, Paris Saint-Germain's Angel Di Maria, while Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann has also been linked lately.

Coutinho still reportedly remains the club's top target in the January window, while some recent reports state that the Catalan club are also trying to lure former Madrid player Mesut Ozil.

And with Barcelona expecting to challenge in all competitions they are involved in, the Club President agreed to the same thought and claimed more quality is needed if they are to win the Champions League.

"There are people more qualified than me, like [general manager] Pep Segura and [CEO] Oscar Grau," Bartomeu said at the Catalan Sports Awards on Monday (November 20) when asked if signings can be anticipated in January.

"We're satisfied with the squad but if there is an opportunity to improve in January, Barca always have to try. The ambition is there. We want to win everything: La Liga, the Copa del Rey... to win the Champions League, maybe [the squad] needs a finishing touch," he added.

Bartomeu also added that his board are looking to offer players like Sergi Roberto, Luis Suarez, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Sergio Busquets a new contract while a new improved contract for Lionel Messi is next on his list.
