Wesley Fofana expressed his excitement after making his first appearance for Chelsea in over a year. He played 69 minutes in their pre-season friendly against Inter at Stamford Bridge, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Lesley Ugochukwu's late goal equalised Marco Thuram's 26th-minute strike. Fofana has only made 20 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Leicester City in 2022 due to a cruciate ligament tear last summer. The French defender was delighted to be back on the field and shared his feelings with Chelsea's media channels. "I'm feeling very good, I'm very happy after a long time. I felt a bit stressed but I enjoyed the moment. It is good to be back at home," he said. Fofana emphasised the difficulty of being away from football, stating, "It is hard [waiting for this moment] because football is my life. When you're not playing for a long time for sure it is hard."Fofana's return saw him contribute significantly to Chelsea's attacking play. He had six final third entries, second only to Enzo Fernandez who had 14. This showed Fofana's advanced position on the pitch compared to his centre-back partner Levi Colwill, who played deeper in defence.Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was pleased with the team's improved attacking performance despite not fully capitalising on their chances. The team had an expected goals total of 2.27 but managed only one goal. Maresca commented, "The team is improving on the ball and off the ball. We created six or seven clear chances. It's important to create chances and then we want to score more."Fofana also contributed defensively by making two clearances and two interceptions, despite not recording any tackles. Maresca noted the team's aggressive approach off the ball, saying, "Off the ball the team was very aggressive recovering most of the time on the ball. I'm very happy because we are improving."Chelsea will begin their Premier League campaign against Manchester City on Sunday.
