West Brom Misses Opportunity To Lead Championship After Draw With Oxford United

West Brom's late draw against Oxford United prevents them from reaching the Championship summit. Meanwhile, Luton Town secures a crucial victory over Watford, easing pressure on their manager.

West Bromwich Albion missed a chance to top the Championship table as Dane Scarlett's late header secured a 1-1 draw for Oxford United. The Baggies were on course to lead the second-tier standings after Karlan Grant scored in the first half at Kassam Stadium. However, Oxford's captain Elliott Moore set up Scarlett's equaliser in the 92nd minute, leaving West Brom fifth with other teams yet to play.

Des Buckingham's Oxford side remained competitive throughout the match. In the final moments, Moore flicked a long throw-in towards Scarlett, who headed it into the top corner. This dramatic finish denied West Brom two crucial points and kept them from climbing higher in the standings.

West Brom Draws While Luton Defeats Watford

Luton Town achieved a significant 3-0 victory over rivals Watford, easing pressure on manager Rob Edwards. Jordan Clark opened scoring within 11 minutes, followed by Carlton Morris' header from Alfie Doughty's corner in the 47th minute. Substitute Jacob Brown sealed Luton's win in stoppage time after a long pass from goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

This win marked Luton's back-to-back league victories over Watford for the first time since 1992. They now sit 15th in the table, just behind Preston North End, who secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Coventry City. Emil Riis' goal at Deepdale was decisive, maintaining Coventry's winless streak there.

Coventry City's struggles continued as they remain just above relegation after their loss to Preston. Meanwhile, Cardiff City matched Coventry on points by thrashing Plymouth Argyle 5-0. Rubin Colwill played a key role with one goal and two assists as Cardiff capitalised on Ibrahim Cissoko's red card for Plymouth.

Cardiff City's Commanding Win

Alex Robertson initiated Cardiff’s scoring with an early goal before Anwar El Ghazi, Callum Robinson, and Chris Willock added to Plymouth’s woes post-interval. This defeat leaves Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth only three points clear of relegation following the Championship’s return from international break.

The Championship race remains tight with several teams vying for top positions and others battling to avoid relegation. As matches continue, every point gained or lost could significantly impact team standings and future prospects in this competitive league.
