West Ham Under Lopetegui: Aiming High For Premier League Opener Against Aston Villa

Julen Lopetegui, West Ham's manager, remains hopeful yet realistic as the team gears up for their Premier League season opener against Aston Villa. With new signings and a focus on hard work, Lopetegui is not setting limits on what the team can achieve.

Julen Lopetegui emphasised that he will not set limits on West Ham's aspirations ahead of their Premier League opener against Aston Villa. Lopetegui, managing his second team in England's top flight, has welcomed several new players to the London Stadium recently. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Crysencio Summerville, and Niclas Fullkrug have all signed with the Hammers. However, the Spaniard acknowledges that achieving their goals will require more than just new signings.

"I don't put limits on our dreams. The only way you can achieve dreams is by working," Lopetegui stated. "We can talk about ambitions, but the most important thing is to work hard every day, especially on the bad days. We need to work with good energy and progress step by step."

West Ham's High Hopes with Lopetegui

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are preparing for the new season along with their first Champions League campaign since 1983 after finishing fourth last season. Unai Emery has also strengthened his squad with eight new arrivals to counteract last year's injury issues. Despite this, Emery stressed that the Premier League remains a priority and called for consistency as they face a busy fixture schedule.

"The first objective is 38 Premier League matches. Then, to play in the Champions League is really the way we want to be competitive," Emery said. "To win a title through the Champions League, we could, but it would be very difficult. We're not refusing this option, but we have to be competitive and consistent in the Premier League."

Crysencio Summerville was last season's Championship Player of the Year and aims to make an impact in his third attempt at the Premier League. The Dutchman contributed to 28 goals for Leeds last season (19 goals and nine assists), trailing only Southampton's Adam Armstrong (34) and Blackburn's Sammie Szmodics (31).

Ollie Watkins comes off his most prolific scoring season with Villa and a semi-final goal for England at Euro 2024. Watkins has been tipped as a Golden Boot contender this season. Since joining from Brentford, he has scored more times (13) in London games than any other Villa player and has 59 Premier League goals overall.

Match Prediction: West Ham Win

Opta's data-led simulations give West Ham a slight edge with a win probability of 41.1%, compared to Villa's 32.2%, while a draw stands at 26.7%. Both teams have struggled on opening days recently; West Ham have lost five of their last six openers against top-four finishers from the previous season.

The Hammers have won just one of their last eight opening Premier League matches (D1 L6), defeating Newcastle 4-2 in 2021-22. They have lost their opening game more often than any other side (15 times). However, they have fared better against Aston Villa recently, losing just one of their last 12 Premier League encounters (W6 D5).

Aston Villa's Opening Day Struggles

Aston Villa have lost their opening Premier League match in each of the last three seasons, conceding ten goals in those games. They also lost their last opening game against West Ham, falling 1-0 at Upton Park in 2012-13.

Emery's side failed to win any of their final four Premier League games in 2023-24 (D2 L2), marking their longest winless run under Emery. The Spaniard last experienced a longer league winless streak between May and September 2021 with Villarreal (D4 L1).
