Graham Potter expressed frustration after West Ham's 3-2 defeat to Brighton, admitting that no positives could be drawn from the match. West Ham seemed poised for victory with goals from Mohammed Kudus and Tomas Soucek overturning Yasin Ayari's early strike. However, Kaoru Mitoma equalised, and Carlos Baleba secured Brighton's win with a long-range goal in stoppage time.
This loss places West Ham 17th in the Premier League standings. Despite their position, they are safe from relegation due to Ipswich Town's defeat by Newcastle United. Potter acknowledged the disappointing season, stating, "We have to acknowledge the season we are having is a bad one." He emphasised the need for improvement despite avoiding relegation.

Potter reflected on the team's performance, highlighting their inability to maintain momentum throughout matches. "The ability to sustain [our performance] is the biggest factor," he noted. Although they created chances and scored twice, conceding two long-range goals was costly. The emotional impact of losing points late in games is significant for the team.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised his team's determination and adherence to their game plan. "This is a great feeling and I'm very happy for the supporters, team and staff because they worked really hard," he said. Hurzeler credited his players for their belief and decision-making during the match.
Since Potter took charge at West Ham, only Southampton, Ipswich, and Leicester City have collected fewer points than his team. This marks West Ham's third consecutive away loss in the Premier League, a streak not seen since May last year. Potter has also struggled against his former club Brighton, losing both league encounters since leaving them in 2022.
Hurzeler remains focused on upcoming matches rather than speculating about European qualification. He stated, "They can talk about it. We just focus on the next game against Newcastle." Brighton has accumulated 51 points this season, only surpassed by their performances in 2022-23 and 1981-82.
The defeat was particularly painful for Potter as it came against his former club. Reflecting on his time at Brighton, he has now lost both Premier League matches against them since departing in 2022. His previous visit as Chelsea manager also ended in a heavy loss.
The ongoing challenges faced by West Ham have taken a toll on both players' physical and mental states. Potter acknowledged this difficulty but stressed that recognising positive aspects of their play remains tough when results are unfavourable.
The season has been challenging for West Ham under Potter's leadership. Despite securing safety from relegation, there is an understanding within the club that improvements are necessary moving forward.
