West Ham Reach FA Cup Quarter-Finals After Brentford Shootout Victory

West Ham United advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals after a 2-2 draw with Brentford, then won the shootout at London Stadium. Jarrod Bowen scored twice, continuing his scoring run against Brentford, while the Hammers now face Leeds United in the last eight, aiming to build momentum ahead of Premier League fixtures.

Jarrod Bowen guided West Ham into the FA Cup quarter-finals and then challenged the squad to lift standards after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Brentford. The tie at London Stadium finished 2-2 after 120 minutes, with Bowen and Igor Thiago both scoring twice before West Ham held their nerve from the spot.

The shoot-out turned when Dango Ouattara attempted a Panenka that Alphonse Areola read and saved, handing West Ham the advantage. Konstantinos Mavropanos then converted the decisive penalty, securing the club’s first FA Cup last-eight appearance since the 2015-16 season and giving supporters a rare high point in a difficult campaign.

West Ham reach FA Cup quarters

Bowen stressed that the performance must be a starting point rather than a one-off, with survival still the priority in the Premier League. West Ham sit one point below safety under Nuno Espirito Santo. Bowen focused on momentum as the club enter a demanding spell against domestic opposition on several fronts.

"We haven't been good enough this season, but we are coming into the business end of it now, and we've got a big game coming up on Saturday [against Manchester City]," Bowen told TNT Sports. "We are into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and things are on the up for us. We have to keep doing it, keep demanding it and keep raising the level."

The FA Cup draw handed West Ham a home quarter-final against Leeds United. Daniel Farke’s Leeds earned their place with a 3-0 success over Norwich City in round five, adding another high-pressure fixture to West Ham’s schedule before the international break later in March.

Bowen warned that Leeds had already shown their threat this season, after West Ham lost 2-1 to the same opponents in the Premier League in October. The forward, though, pointed to the Brentford display as evidence that West Ham can compete strongly at London Stadium when the stakes rise.

"Leeds are a good side and will want to do well in the FA Cup as well," Bowen added."But we saw here what we did at home against a Premier League side. We have two really big games before the international break that we want to go and get maximum points from. Now it's about rest, because 120 minutes isn't good for anyone. We go and rest, play at the weekend, then play Aston Villa and hopefully go into the break with two results."

Those comments underline how tightly packed the calendar is, with league fixtures against Manchester City and Aston Villa shaping both the relegation fight and the mood before that Leeds quarter-final. Nuno and Bowen both highlighted the need for recovery time after such a long, intense cup tie.

Bowen’s record versus Brentford and West Ham FA Cup impact

Bowen’s latest brace continued a strong personal run against Brentford across league and cup. The England international now has nine goals in all competitions against the Bees, seven for West Ham and two from Bowen’s time at Hull City, which is more than Bowen has managed against any other opponent.

Since Brentford reached the Premier League in 2021-22, no player has scored more often against them in all competitions than Bowen. Bowen’s tally of seven goals in that period is matched only by Phil Foden and Mohamed Salah, underlining how often Brentford have struggled to contain Bowen’s movement and finishing.

Player Club(s) Goals vs Brentford (all competitions) Period
Jarrod Bowen West Ham, Hull City 9 Career total
Jarrod Bowen West Ham 7 Since 2021-22
Phil Foden Manchester City 7 Since 2021-22
Mohamed Salah Liverpool 7 Since 2021-22

Bowen avoided dwelling on those individual numbers, instead repeating that collective improvement matters more than personal milestones. The forward’s goals and penalties lifted the crowd, but the message from Bowen after the final whistle centred on consistency, work rate and taking that form back into league competition.

Nuno’s response to West Ham FA Cup win

Nuno shared Bowen’s cautious optimism and stressed that the Brentford result must act as a platform rather than a conclusion. The head coach pointed to the connection between players and supporters at London Stadium as a key factor heading into the clash with Manchester City.

"Now we have to rest knowing that Saturday we are going to face a tough one, but we are confident again in our stadium," Nuno added. "The boys are enjoying playing in the London Stadium, the atmosphere is good. Again we expect it to be a tough one but we want to compete and our situation requires the best of each one of us."

With a quarter-final against Leeds secured, a long penalty shoot-out behind them and crucial league games next, West Ham move into the coming weeks with cautious belief. The Brentford win offers encouragement, but Nuno and Bowen both stress that performance levels must keep rising if the season is to finish on a positive note.
