West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui expressed disappointment despite his team's 3-1 home loss to Manchester City in their third league game. "It is true that City is one of the best teams around the world for sure but it is also true too that in the second half we have been very close to a draw," he told BBC Match of the Day.
West Ham began the match with aggression, creating early chances before conceding a goal within 10 minutes. "In my mind we started very well, being aggressive," said Lopetegui. He acknowledged that facing a team like City often means conceding initiative, making it crucial to perform exceptionally well to compete.

The Hammers had several opportunities to equalise when trailing 2-1, with Mohammed Kudus hitting the bar in the second half. Lopetegui noted, "In the second half we had chances, I think we kept the ball much more, much more, and didn't concede a lot of chances."
Lopetegui highlighted the difficulty of competing against top-tier players like Erling Haaland, who scored his second hat-trick in consecutive matches. "He is one of the best players in the world, that's why he plays for Manchester City," he said. The manager emphasised that City's quality allows them to create numerous scoring opportunities.
Despite West Ham's strong performance in parts of the game, they were ultimately undone by City's clinical finishing. Lopetegui felt his team missed an opportunity to secure a draw. "Today I think the first goal was a pity for us but I've said it. I was happy with the performance think we were able to draw but again they damage us," he remarked.
Lopetegui stressed the importance of minimising mistakes against elite teams like Manchester City. "Against this kind of team, if you make a mistake they don't forgive. This is the difference they have," he explained. He urged his players to strive for near-perfection and remain composed while defending.
The manager remains optimistic about his squad's potential, acknowledging their quality and urging them to improve their competitive edge against top teams. "Don't make mistakes, be calm, defend well—we have quality players too," he concluded.
A strong second-half showing, but the visitors take all three points.
