Julen Lopetegui expressed his dissatisfaction with West Ham's performance after their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in his debut match as manager. Amadou Onana gave Villa an early lead, scoring just four minutes into the game. Lucas Paqueta equalised from the penalty spot before halftime, but Jhon Duran's goal in the 79th minute sealed the victory for Villa.Onana's goal highlighted West Ham's defensive issues, particularly Michail Antonio's difficulty in marking the Belgian international. All of Onana's Premier League goals have been headers, raising concerns about West Ham's ability to defend set-pieces effectively. Lopetegui acknowledged these shortcomings and stressed the need for improvement."We're going to have a lot of things to improve. Above all in the second half we have a big opportunity to win the match and we lost. We have to learn and improve in the next step," he told Sky Sports.Lopetegui was also critical of his team's lack of finishing prowess. Tomas Soucek missed two clear chances to equalise late in the game, leaving Lopetegui pondering what could have been. "We had the last 20 minutes under control and had a good chance to score the second goal, but didn't," he later told BBC Match of the Day.West Ham's expected goals (xG) stood at 2.4, indicating they created enough opportunities but failed to convert them. In contrast, Aston Villa were more clinical with their chances, scoring from an xG of 1.89.
West Ham 1-2 Aston Villa

Unlike last season, Aston Villa begin their campaign with an impressive away win. Jhon Durn's winner, assisted by Jacob Ramsey, was Villa's fourth Premier League goal in 2024 where both players involved were subs, more than any other side.

Lopetegui remains optimistic about his team's potential despite this initial setback. He believes that with time and effort, West Ham can address their weaknesses and perform better in upcoming matches."We suffered with their second goal, but after that we had two clear chances [to equalise]. We didn't [take them] and we have to keep the good things," he said. The Spaniard is focused on learning from this experience and making necessary adjustments to improve West Ham's performance moving forward.
