West Ham United have parted ways with head coach Julen Lopetegui. Graham Potter, previously with Brighton and Chelsea, is anticipated to replace him. The Hammers are currently 14th in the Premier League standings, having accumulated 23 points from 20 matches. Their recent 4-1 loss to Manchester City contributed to this decision.
Lopetegui's tenure saw West Ham win only seven games across all competitions. They suffered ten defeats and drew five times. He took over from David Moyes in May 2024, marking his second stint in English football after managing Wolves from November 2022 to August 2023.

The former Spain and Real Madrid manager struggled to gain the support of West Ham fans. His pragmatic approach was questioned despite spending nearly £120 million on players like Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
A club statement mentioned that the first half of the 2024-25 season did not meet their expectations. Consequently, they decided to make changes aligning with their goals. Alongside Lopetegui, assistant head coach Pablo Sanz and several other staff members have also departed.
Reports suggest that Graham Potter will be named as Lopetegui's successor within a day. Potter has been without a job since Chelsea dismissed him in April 2023. Lopetegui's position was precarious before a victory against Wolves on December 9 sparked a four-match unbeaten streak.
Despite this brief success, a heavy defeat by Liverpool at the end of 2024 and another loss to City led to his exit. This occurred less than five months after he assumed control of the team.
This season, West Ham endured six league losses by three or more goals—more than any other team. They scored only 24 league goals while underperforming their expected goals (xG) of 29.1 by -5.1, ranking fourth-worst in this metric.
Their upcoming fixtures include an FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa on Friday and a Premier League game against Fulham at the London Stadium next Tuesday.
The club expressed gratitude towards Julen Lopetegui and his staff for their efforts during their tenure with West Ham and wished them success in future endeavours. The search for a new head coach is already underway.
