West Ham Secure 3-1 Victory Over Sunderland To Edge Closer To Premier League Safety

West Ham kept the Premier League survival push alive with a 3-1 home victory over Sunderland at London Stadium, powered by three first-half goals. Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes all scored as West Ham moved to within two points of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, tightening a tense battle near the bottom.

The result followed the vital win over Tottenham that ended a 10-game league run without victory, and it also marked West Ham's first Premier League home success since 8 November. Bowen again shaped the contest, producing a goal and an assist while also reaching several personal milestones for the club.

Bowen delivered another influential display, starting with a driving run down the right that created Summerville's opener. The winger's precise cross allowed Summerville to climb highest and head West Ham ahead in the 14th minute, giving Summerville three goals in three consecutive Premier League matches.

Later in the first half, Bowen doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after Ollie Scarles was tripped by Trai Hume's outstretched leg. The forward stayed calm from 12 yards and converted. Bowen has now scored and assisted in 11 different Premier League games for West Ham, surpassing Paolo Di Canio's previous club mark of 10.

Sunderland had threatened first when Noah Sadiki's fierce half-volley forced Alphonse Areola into an early save, but West Ham quickly settled. The first-half surge was capped on 43 minutes, when Fernandes collected possession around 30 yards out and unleashed a stunning strike into the top-left corner, leaving Sunderland's defence static.

After the interval, Sunderland improved and pulled a goal back in the 66th minute. Brian Brobbey met Nordi Mukiele's accurate cross and guided a firm header beyond Areola. The Black Cats almost reduced the deficit further when Luke O'Nien's attempted cross struck the woodwork, with West Ham briefly under pressure.

West Ham still carried a threat on the counter and from distance. Fernandes nearly repeated the earlier spectacular strike, again trying his luck from range and smashing the crossbar in stoppage time. Moments later, Tomas Soucek thought West Ham had a fourth, but the effort was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Robin Roefs.

Key numbers also underlined West Ham's control. The hosts produced 13 shots and an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.43, compared with Sunderland's seven attempts and 0.65 xG. West Ham's strong home record against newly promoted teams continued as well, with 11 wins and two draws from the last 13 such Premier League fixtures.

That contribution meant Bowen became the West Ham player with the outright most Premier League goal involvements, moving clear of Michail Antonio. With back-to-back league wins secured, a first home success since early November recorded, and the gap to Nottingham Forest reduced, West Ham strengthened hopes of staying in the division.
