Manchester City lost ground in the Premier League title race after a 1-1 draw at West Ham, who climbed out of the relegation zone. The result means City stay nine points behind Arsenal with eight league matches remaining this season.
Arsenal had earlier beaten Everton, so City needed victory at London Stadium to cut the gap back to seven. Despite long spells of pressure and a late chance for Marc Guehi, City could not turn control into three points.

City moved ahead on 31 minutes when Bernardo Silva’s attempted cross dropped over Mads Hermansen and into the net. West Ham replied quickly, though, as Jarrod Bowen’s corner was misjudged by Gianluigi Donnarumma and Konstantinos Mavropanos powered a header in off the underside of the bar.
After the equaliser, Manchester City kept West Ham pinned back for long stretches. Antoine Semenyo shot wide, Erling Haaland saw a low effort pushed past the post by Hermansen, and Tijjani Reijnders had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar by another sharp save from the West Ham goalkeeper.
The best opening for City arrived deep in stoppage time. Following a scramble from a set-piece, the ball dropped to Marc Guehi, unmarked in the box, but the defender sent a rising shot over, wasting City’s final clear chance to win the Premier League contest.
West Ham created very little but were clinical with the decisive moment. The Hammers had just one shot in the entire Premier League match, their joint-fewest on record in Opta’s database, yet that single effort from Mavropanos secured a valuable point under pressure.
City’s draw also continued a worrying trend. The equaliser was the 13th leveller City have allowed in this Premier League campaign, the highest number in any league season for the club. Nuno Espirito Santo will be encouraged by West Ham’s discipline and work rate in such a tense situation.
| Team | Situation after match |
|---|---|
| Manchester City | 9 points behind Arsenal, 8 league games left |
| West Ham | 17th place, above Nottingham Forest and outside relegation zone |
Historically, the Premier League title gap is not fatal for City, but the margin is large. The only side to win the league after trailing by nine or more points that late in a season is City themselves in 2013-14, when City sat nine behind the leaders on 20 April after 33 games.
The draw leaves Manchester City facing a difficult Premier League chase while West Ham gain a boost in their survival bid. City’s dominance did not bring enough clear chances, whereas West Ham’s single shot proved decisive and lifted the team outside the bottom three for the first time since December.
