What is FIFA World Cup 2026 Pride Match? Why are Egypt and Iran protesting it?

The FIFA World Cup Pride Match refers to a group-stage fixture in the 2026 tournament, scheduled for June 26 at Lumen Field in Seattle, designated by local organizers as a "Pride Match" to align with the city's PrideFest weekend celebrations honoring the LGBTQIA+ community.

This planning occurred before the official World Cup draw, which unexpectedly placed Egypt and Iran in the same Group G, making their matchup the featured game. Seattle's committee has promoted related community events, like an art contest, outside the stadium despite the controversy.

Protests by Egypt and Iran

Egypt's football federation sent a letter to FIFA rejecting any Pride-related activities, stating they contradict cultural, religious, and social values in Arab and Islamic societies, and demanded a focus solely on sport. Iran's federation president, Mehdi Taj, called the scheduling "unreasonable and illogical," signaling support for a specific group, and plans to raise it at a FIFA Council meeting.

Both nations, where homosexuality faces severe legal penalties-death in Iran and prosecution under debauchery laws in Egypt, view the association as provocative and the match has been criticized by their respective associations.

Egypt's Football Association sent a formal letter to FIFA's secretary-general rejecting any Pride-related events, arguing they contradict regional principles and violate FIFA statutes on neutrality in political and social issues, as well as rules against inciting fan tensions. The federation emphasized keeping the focus solely on sport amid reports of planned local activities like art contests tied to PrideFest.

Iran's federation president, Mehdi Taj, labeled the branding "unreasonable and illogical" for signaling support to a specific group, planning to raise it at FIFA meetings.

"Both Egypt and we have objected, because this is an unreasonable and illogical move that essentially signals support for a particular group, and we must definitely address this point," Taj said.

How is Seattle preparing?

The Seattle organizing committee insists on proceeding with Pride programming outside the venue to promote unity through soccer. Local organizers have already started promoting this match and an art contest is being planned, with a rainbow-coloured flag over Mount Rainier.
