What is new Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim's relationship with former manager Jose Mourinho?

Manchester United has officially appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, signing the Portuguese tactician to a deal through the summer of 2027, with an option for an additional year.

Amorim, widely regarded as one of Europe's most promising young managers, steps in to replace Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed earlier in the week following a 2-1 defeat to West Ham.

At 39, Amorim arrives at Old Trafford with a reputation for fresh ideas and impressive tactical acumen, attributes that many United fans hope will inject momentum into a troubled campaign.

The former Sporting Lisbon coach will face the same daunting challenge that confronted Ten Hag when he took over the team's downward trajectory.

After a two-year run, Ten Hag ultimately saw his tenure cut short, but his work raised expectations at the club, especially for Amorim, who now assumes the task of steadying the Red Devils.

Adding to the optimism around Amorim's appointment is the high praise he has received from a former Manchester United manager-Jose Mourinho. Currently managing Fenerbahce, Mourinho has publicly rated Amorim as a top talent with the potential to become one of Europe's leading managers.

Reports suggest that Mourinho even advised the United position to Amorim last week.

Amorim and Mourinho share a mutual respect, one rooted in Manchester United. In 2018, at the onset of his coaching career, Amorim completed an internship under Mourinho at Old Trafford before taking his first managerial role with the Lisbon club Casa Pia.

Amorim has frequently referred to Mourinho as his coaching reference, describing him as a "unique coach."

Amorim's journey with Manchester United is set to begin after the November international break, with his first match on the sidelines scheduled against newly promoted Ipswich Town on November 24.
