What Led To The Car Crash That Claimed Lives Of Diogo Jota And Andre Silva? Police Finds Evidence In Investigation

New details have emerged in the tragic accident that took the lives of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva. Spanish authorities investigating the July 3 crash have indicated that excessive speed may have been a key factor behind the deadly incident on a motorway in Zamora, northwestern Spain.

According to a statement from the Spanish Civil Guard on Tuesday, skid marks and tyre traces found at the scene suggest that the vehicle, driven by Jota, was likely travelling faster than the legal speed limit.

"All the tests conducted so far indicate that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota," the Civil Guard confirmed. "Everything points to a possible excessive speed beyond the road's speed limit," they added.

Earlier reports indicated that a tyre might have blown out as the car was overtaking, causing it to veer off the road before bursting into flames. Both Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, died at the scene, sending shockwaves through the football world just days after Jota had celebrated his wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. The couple shared three children together.

The tragic news sparked an outpouring of grief across Portugal and the global football community. Liverpool FC, where Jota had been a standout performer since joining in 2020, paid tribute to their striker. He had scored 65 goals over five seasons and played a key role in their FA Cup and League Cup triumphs in the 2021/22 season. Most recently, he helped Liverpool lift their 20th league title and represented Portugal in their UEFA Nations League victory.

Andre Silva, Jota's younger brother, was a midfielder for FC Penafiel, competing in Portugal's second division.

Thousands attended their funeral in Gondomar, near Porto, including prominent Portuguese political figures and several current and former football stars. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on piecing together the moments leading up to the crash. The loss of the Jota brothers remains a deeply felt tragedy in both club and country.
