Mumbai City FC, the defending champions of the Indian Super League (ISL), have been hit with a national transfer ban imposed by FIFA. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed the development in an official statement, noting that the club can no longer register new players until the ban is lifted.
The AIFF's statement read: "A national ban on the registration of new players has been imposed on the Club Mumbai City FC. The ban will be effective immediately, as per the communications received from FIFA's Head of Disciplinary." The issue stems from a failure to settle solidarity payments owed to a Brazilian club.

Solidarity payments are a key mechanism in FIFA's transfer system, designed to reward clubs that have helped develop players between the ages of 12 and 23. When a player moves to a new club before the end of their contract, a percentage (5%) of the transfer fee must be distributed to the clubs involved in the player's development.
The current transfer ban adds to Mumbai City FC's challenges this season. They have had a difficult start to their ISL campaign, with only two points from their first four matches. Their most recent performances include a 2-3 loss to Jamshedpur FC and a goalless draw against Bengaluru FC.
These struggles, coupled with the inability to sign new players, place the team in a precarious position as they attempt to defend their title. The ban is expected to be resolved quickly, with reports indicating that the club has been given 24 to 48 hours to clear the outstanding dues.
However, until the situation is resolved, Mumbai City FC will be unable to sign any new players, either in the upcoming transfer window or by bringing in free agents. This is not the first time the club has faced disciplinary issues.
Last season, foreign players Rostyn Griffiths and Jorge Pereyra Diaz were suspended for five and four matches, respectively, following a heated semifinal encounter. In 2019, the club's under-18 side was also handed a one-year suspension for misconduct during a local match.
