On July 3, 2025, the football world was struck by tragedy when Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, aged 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, lost their lives in a car crash in northwestern Spain.
The fatal accident occurred on the A-52 highway near the municipality of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, close to the Portuguese border.

Jota was driving a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder, heading toward Santander, Spain, to catch a ferry back to the United Kingdom. This journey was prompted by medical advice against flying due to recent minor lung-related surgery, following a rib injury sustained during a match against Chelsea in October 2024.
According to reports, Jota and his brother were travelling from their hometown of Porto, Portugal, approximately 190 miles into a 10-hour journey to Santander.
The ferry was their intended route back to England, where Jota was due to report for Liverpool's pre-season training starting Monday (July 7), ahead of their first friendly match against Preston North End on July 13.
The crash, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. local time, was attributed to a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle, causing the car to veer off the road, roll, and burst into flames. The blaze also spread to surrounding vegetation, complicating rescue efforts.
Spanish authorities, including the Guardia Civil, are investigating the incident as a possible speeding case, though no other vehicles were involved. The tragedy came just 11 days after Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, in Porto, leaving behind his wife and three young children.
Tributes have poured in from fans, teammates, and football figures worldwide, mourning the loss of a beloved player known for his skill, humility, and infectious joy. Liverpool FC and the Portuguese Football Federation expressed profound devastation, emphasizing Jota's extraordinary legacy both on and off the pitch.
