Which Premier League Clubs Qualified for Champions League 2025-26 and Why Nine PL Clubs Will Play in Europe Next Season?

The 2025-26 UEFA Champions League will include a historic six Premier League teams in the expanded 36-team league phase format.

This unprecedented number of English clubs comes from a combination of domestic league standings, UEFA’s association club coefficient rankings, and Tottenham Hotspur’s win in the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League final.

Why Are Six Premier League Teams in the UCL 2025-26?

From next season, UEFA allocates two additional Champions League spots to the top-performing leagues, determined by coefficient points based on club performances in the Champions League, Europa League, and UEFA Conference League. These leagues are ranked via the "association club coefficient." Each club victory in UEFA competitions earns their league two points, a draw earns one point, and a loss earns none. Bonus points are also awarded based on a club’s progress in their tournament, with higher points for advancing past the round of 16.

How the Premier League Secured an Extra Champions League Spot?

The Premier League earned an extra Champions League spot for 2025-26 due to England’s strong performance in UEFA’s association club coefficient rankings. This “European Performance Spot” (EPS) was secured through the collective success of English clubs in 2024-25 UEFA competitions, notably Arsenal’s run to the Champions League semifinals. As a result, the top five teams in the 2024-25 Premier League qualified directly for the Champions League league phase, expanding the usual top-four allocation to five.

Tottenham’s Europa League victory added a sixth qualification spot, as their win guaranteed Champions League entry regardless of their league standing. Had another English club outside the top five won the UCL, an additional team could have qualified, but no Premier League side reached the final.

The six Premier League clubs set to participate in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League are Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. All but Tottenham qualified via their league positions. Tottenham secured their Champions League spot by winning the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League, defeating Manchester United in the final. Alongside the EPL, Spain’s La Liga was the only other league awarded an additional Champions League berth.

Which Other Premier League Teams Are in European Competitions?

Despite valiant efforts, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest narrowly missed Champions League qualification after dropping their final matches. Villa finished sixth with 66 points, and Forest ended with 65 points. Consequently, Aston Villa will compete in the UEFA Europa League, and Nottingham Forest will participate in the UEFA Conference League next season.

Additionally, Crystal Palace will join Villa in the Europa League after securing the 2024-25 FA Cup with a victory over Manchester City in the final. In total, nine English clubs will take part in various European competitions next season.
