Inter Miami will start their inaugural Club World Cup campaign on Saturday (June 14) at Hard Rock Stadium in the USA against the Egyptian side Al Ahly.
Lionel Messi, currently playing for Inter Miami, has an impressive 2025 season with 10 goals and 5 assists in 13 matches. As he gears up to lead the Herons against Al Ahly, the Argentine icon has a chance to get his name into the tournament’s history by breaking multiple records.

Inter Miami is placed in Group A, along with Al Ahly, Porto and Palmeiras. Given the current form of the team and the strength of their opponents, Miami may not have a very deep run in this CWC campaign. Having won the Club World Cup three times with Barcelona, Messi faces a tougher challenge this year due to the tournament’s expansion. Hence, Messi will get less chances to break those records.
Despite the dip in the form of the Herons, Messi’s scoring prowess continues. If it extends to the CWC, it may lead him to overtake Ronaldo’s all-time Club World Cup goal record. Ronaldo leads with seven goals, but with the Portuguese star absent, Messi, currently at five goals in five appearances, will need just two more to surpass him.
Messi has the opportunity to become the oldest player to score in the Club World Cup. At 38 years old, he could surpass Javier Zanetti’s record, set in 2010 at 37 years, 4 months and 5 days. If Messi finds the net, he’ll claim this milestone, though other veterans like Luka Modric could also vie for it.
Despite being one of the best playmakers in the world, Messi’s recently struggled to provide enough assists. With one Club World Cup assist, he trails Neri Cardozo and Shoma Doi, who each have five. Needing four assists to tie and five to break the record, Messi’s MLS assist rate of one every 204.9 minutes suggests he’ll need to elevate his game against Group A opponents Al Ahly, Porto, and Palmeiras.
The record for most combined goals and assists, currently held by Ronaldo with 10, is also within reach. Messi, with six-goal contributions, needs four more to match Ronaldo. Al-Hilal’s Salem Al-Dawsari, also at six, could compete for this record, but Messi’s group stage guarantee of at least three matches gives him a strong shot.
