Spanish women's footballer Jenni Hermoso has testified against the former Spanish football president over an alleged forced kiss incident following Spain's Women's World Cup victory in 2023.
Former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales is the culprit, who has been alleged for sexual assault on the player and public coerce to support him.

Jennifer "Jenni" Hermoso is a prominent Spanish footballer, celebrated for her exceptional skills and contributions to the sport. Born on May 9, 1990, in Madrid, she has played for top clubs like FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and has been a key player for the Spanish national team. Hermoso won the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and has been a victim of a sexual assault.
The incident in question occurred on August 20, 2023, during the medal ceremony after Spain's victory in the Women's World Cup final. Luis Rubiales, then president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), kissed Hermoso on the lips without her consent.
This act was widely condemned as inappropriate and a stark example of sexism in sports. Rubiales faced immediate backlash, with many calling for his resignation. He initially dismissed the criticism but later issued an apology, stating that the kiss was spontaneous and without any ulterior sexual intention.
However, Hermoso clarified that she did not consent to the kiss and felt disrespected by the act. The incident led to Rubiales' resignation and a three-year ban from football-related activities by FIFA. As of February 2025, Rubiales is on trial, facing charges of sexual assault and coercion related to the incident.
And now Hermoso has testified against Rubiales at the Madrid High Court. She made it clear that the kiss from Rubiales was completely against her consent.
"I felt disrespected. I think it was a moment that stained one of the happiest days of my life," Hermoso said.
Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if convicted, according to court officials. The trial is expected to last at least 10 days. Nearly 20 witnesses are set to testify, including Spain's men's national team coach Luis de la Fuente and several of Hermoso's teammates from the women's team, such as former world player of the year Alexia Putellas.
Former Spain women's national team coach Jorge Vilda, former sports director of the men's team Albert Luque, and the federation's ex-head of marketing Ruben Rivera are also facing trial for the same incident, who colluded with Rubiales. They are accused of trying to pressure Hermoso into publicly supporting Rubiales after the incident.
