FC Barcelona's La Liga match against CA Osasuna, scheduled for Saturday night, was postponed due to the sudden passing of the club's first-team doctor, Carles Minarro Garcia.
The announcement came shortly before the match was set to begin at the Estadi Olimpic Lluís Companys, with fans already present in the stadium.
In an official statement, FC Barcelona expressed their deep sorrow on Saturday.
"FC Barcelona is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first-team doctor Carles Miñarro Garcia this evening. For this reason, the match between FC Barcelona and CA Osasuna has been postponed to a later date," the statement read.
Carles Minarro Garcia, aged 40, had been associated with FC Barcelona since 2017. Before joining the club, he served as an assistant doctor at the Centre d'Alt Rendiment de Sant Cugat and was the head of medical services at Centre d'Esports Sabadell. This season marked his promotion to the first team, where he worked alongside Dr. Ricard Pruna. He was a student of Universitat de Barcelona and passed his medical course from there.
The tragic news was delivered to the players in the locker room by club president Joan Laporta, leading to the decision to postpone the match. Both FC Barcelona and Osasuna have extended their condolences to Minarro's family and friends. The postponed match will be played on a latter date and La Liga may announce it after a few days.
Barcleona's arch-rivals Real Madrid also took to social media and penned their condolences.
"Real Madrid C.F., its president and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of F.C. Barcelona's doctor, Carles Miñarro García. Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and affection to all his family, his teammates, F.C. Barcelona and all his loved ones," a statement from Real Madrid read.
