Next Netherlands Manager: Arne Slot Leads Race Ahead of Erik ten Hag

The Liverpool coach is among several high-profile names being linked with the Oranje job following Ronald Koeman's resignation after the Netherlands' World Cup elimination.

The search for the Netherlands' next head coach is underway after Ronald Koeman stepped down following the Oranje's shock Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Arne Slot emerging as the early favourite to succeed him.

Arne Slot

According to reports in the Netherlands, KNVB technical director Nigel de Jong has already begun the process of identifying Koeman's replacement ahead of the UEFA Nations League campaign, which begins in September.

Arne Slot leads the race

Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has quickly emerged as the bookmakers' favourite and one of the most popular choices among Dutch supporters.

The 47-year-old, who previously guided Feyenoord to Eredivisie success, is widely admired for his attacking philosophy, with many believing his style better reflects the traditional Dutch identity after criticism that Koeman's side had become too pragmatic.

Although journalist Mikos Gouka reported that Slot generally prefers the day-to-day demands of club football, sources close to the coach have indicated he would view the Netherlands job as a tremendous honour and would be open to taking charge.

Erik ten Hag among leading alternatives

Former Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag is also firmly in contention.

The 55-year-old is currently working in a technical role with FC Twente after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, but the opportunity to manage the national team could tempt him back into coaching.

Ten Hag's experience at both club and international youth level makes him one of the strongest alternatives should the KNVB fail to secure Slot.

Internal and domestic candidates also under consideration

If the Dutch federation opts for continuity, Netherlands Under-21 head coach Michael Reiziger is regarded as the leading internal candidate.

Reiziger has impressed with Jong Oranje and already has strong relationships with many of the country's emerging talents.

PSV Eindhoven manager Peter Bosz is another name frequently mentioned after leading the club to three consecutive Eredivisie titles, although reports suggest there are questions over whether the KNVB views him as the ideal long-term fit.

Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy has also entered the conversation. The former Manchester United striker served as one of Koeman's assistants and offers familiarity with the current squad despite mixed managerial spells at PSV and Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola and Sarina Wiegman linked with Oranje job

Several high-profile names have also been floated, although they appear significantly less likely.

England Women's manager Sarina Wiegman has received backing from Dutch pundits Jan and Youri Mulder, who believe her tactical pedigree and previous success with the Netherlands women's team make her a worthy candidate.

Pep Guardiola has also been linked after former Netherlands international Frank de Boer revealed the Manchester City boss had privately expressed an interest in coaching the Oranje one day.

Guardiola himself hinted at the possibility in the *Força Koeman* documentary, saying:

"If the Netherlands ever needs a coach... here I am!"

Former Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has also been mentioned, although a fourth spell in charge is considered highly unlikely given the 74-year-old's age and health.

KNVB facing race against time

The Dutch federation is expected to move quickly, with the UEFA Nations League campaign beginning on September 24 against Germany.

After a disappointing World Cup campaign that ended with a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco, the KNVB faces a crucial appointment as it looks to rebuild ahead of the next major international cycle.
