By MyKhel Staff

The recent revelation that Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez applied for the head coach position of the Indian men's football team sent shockwaves through Indian football circles.

Xavi, a celebrated midfielder and accomplished coach, submitted his application following the departure of Manolo Marquez. This unexpected development caught the All India Football Federation (AIFF) off guard and generated a buzz among fans eager to see a global icon lead the national side.

Xavi's footballing résumé is impressive-he played over 700 games for Barcelona, winning multiple domestic and international titles, including the FIFA World Cup and European Championships with Spain. As a coach, he has demonstrated success with Al-Sadd in Qatar, securing seven trophies in under 100 matches, and later managed Barcelona through a challenging rebuilding phase, achieving domestic success and stabilizing the team.

Why did AIFF reject Xavi as India Head Coach?

Despite these credentials, the AIFF's technical committee decided not to consider Xavi for the final shortlist, citing financial constraints as the primary reason. As per a report from Times of India, while Xavi sent his application directly via email, the committee members were reportedly stunned by the prospect of hiring such a prestigious figure, primarily because they deemed the salary and related financial demands unaffordable within the federation's budget.

An AIFF official stated, "Even if Xavi was genuinely interested, we would need a lot of money," underscoring the economic impracticality of his hiring at this juncture.

Who are leading the race for India coach?

The AIFF technical committee met virtually on Wednesday and has shortlist the applicants for the Senior Men's Indian Football Team head coach role. Consequently, they focused on more financially viable candidates, including familiar names like former India coach Stephen Constantine and Indian Super League's Khalid Jamil. Apart from that, former Kyrgyzstan coach Stefan Tarkovic has also been shortlisted for the role.

While fans might have welcomed the appointment of a world-class figure like Xavi, the AIFF's rejection highlights the complexities involved in balancing ambition with fiscal realities.
