Why Has Folarin Balogun's Red Card Decision Drove A Wedge Between UEFA & FIFA? EXPLAINED
Folarin Balogun, the US men's soccer team's forward, is weathering a difficult storm amid the FIFA World Cup 2026 after the global soccer association gave the 25-year-old a long rope on an on-field foul and gave a red card against the Bosnia & Herzegovina match in the Round of 32.
The global football body announced recently that it had suspended the red-card which was awarded to him, which would have meant an automatic suspension from the match against Belgium. However, with the decision now revoked, the USMNT will be able to field a full squad.

The decision, especially in the light of Donald Trump stepping onto the scene, has generated a lot of furore in the footballing world, right from UEFA, to the Belgian football association, and former players like Wayne Rooney.
Here is a breakdown of the entire incident that went down.
Why Did Balogun Receive The Red Card?
Folarin Balogun was shown a red card after catching Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemović on the right ankle during the USA's 2-0 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 victory, resulting in an automatic one-match suspension.
The 25-year-old was dismissed following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, although USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino insisted the challenge did not warrant a red card.
The decision sparked widespread debate, with fans and pundits split over the incident. Some believed the dismissal was justified, while others argued Balogun lost his balance and made accidental contact rather than intentionally stamping on his opponent. Speaking on Friday, Balogun said he felt a yellow card would have been a fairer punishment.
The suspension was later overturned after US President Donald Trump intervened on Balogun's behalf, clearing the striker to feature against Belgium in Monday's World Cup Round of 16 clash.
FIFA cited Article 27 of its Disciplinary Committee regulations in reversing the suspension-
The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure. By suspending the implementation of the sanction, the judicial body subjects the person sanctioned to a probationary period of one to four years.
UEFA vs FIFA: Football World Divides Over Balogun
UEFA, the European football body, also released a statement criticizing FIFA over their decision. "Yesterday's decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line," UEFA said in a press release.
The UEFA statement added: "We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision."
Meanwhile, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said that it was 'surprised' with the way FIFA has dealt with the entire decision of Folarin Balogun.
"In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options," the RBFA said in an official statement.
How Has The Incident Garnered Reactions From Former Footballers?
Wayne Rooney On Folarin Balogun
Wayne Rooney slammed FIFA's decision to suspend Folarin Balogun's red-card ban, calling it "an absolute disgrace." He argued that if the red card was deemed incorrect, it should have been overturned outright rather than suspended for a year.
The former England captain also criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino, saying the decision undermines the sport's integrity and that any of the USA's opponents would have every right to feel aggrieved.
Sepp Blatter Criticises FIFA
Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA president who led the organisation from 1998 to 2015, also criticised the body's decision.
"Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies," he wrote on X. "If a U.S. President intervenes with the FIFA President, and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match, the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA?"
Tuchel Sides With Balogun
Thomas Tuchel, the English coach, has, however, decided to side with Balogun and said that the American striker. Tuchel said he did not believe Folarin Balogun's challenge warranted a red card but questioned FIFA's decision to suspend the striker's punishment after the dismissal had already been upheld through VAR.
Speaking after England's 3-2 Round of 16 victory over Mexico, Tuchel expressed confusion over the process behind overturning the suspension.
"I think first of all to be very clear that it is not a red card [for Balogun]. But VAR got involved, and obviously, three people from VAR checked it and thought that it was a red card. So the decision is made."
He also questioned the basis for reversing the sanction after the fact.
"Who overturns this decision then, and when? And on what grounds? How far does this go now? This is strange for me ... Where does this start and where does this end?"
