Why has Robert Lewandowski decided to not play for Poland? Shocking Reason Revealed

By MyKhel Staff

Robert Lewandowski has announced that he will no longer be available for the Polish national team as long as Michal Probierz remains head coach.

The decision has arrived as a massive setback for Poland, given the striker's status as the nation's all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. Lewandowski is having a fallout with the current head coach. The differences between the duo have created the issue, as Poland are missing their star talisman.

Lewandowski, 36, communicated his stance in a post on X, stating: "Taking into account the circumstances and the loss of trust in the head coach of the Polish national team, I have decided to step down from playing for the national team for as long as he remains in charge. I hope I will still have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world."

Why has Robert Lewandowski quit for Poland?

The announcement comes on the heels of Probierz's decision to replace Lewandowski as team captain, appointing Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zieliński in his place. The Polish Football Association confirmed the development in an official statement.

"Piotr Zieliński has been named the new captain of the national team by head coach Michal Probierz. The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the coaching staff of his decision," the statement said.

Lewandowski, who has scored 85 goals in 158 appearances for Poland, had withdrawn from the team's recent friendly against Moldova and their World Cup qualifier against Finland. The Barcelona striker cited physical and mental exhaustion following a demanding club season.

Speaking to Polish media, Lewandowski explained, "I did not feel good physically, but especially mentally. None of you thought about the fact that you can be mentally tired."

His remarks followed a season in which he played a central role in Barcelona's La Liga title run. He suffered a thigh injury in April that sidelined him for two weeks, during which he missed key matches, including the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal against Inter. Although he returned for the second leg, his involvement was limited to a substitute appearance in a 4-3 defeat.

Poland currently sits atop Group G in World Cup qualifying with two wins from two matches. However, the absence of Lewandowski poses a serious challenge for Probierz and the team moving forward.

The situation reflects more than a temporary withdrawal due to fitness concerns. It is a deliberate stance driven by internal dynamics within the national setup, particularly the breakdown in trust between Poland's most senior player and the head coach.

For now, Lewandowski's future with the national team remains uncertain. His return appears conditional on a change in leadership - a scenario that may or may not unfold before the 2026 World Cup cycle concludes.
