Why is AFC Asian Cup 2027 Postponed? Saudi Arabia Tournament Rescheduled to December 2027, Reason Revealed
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially postponed the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, with the continental tournament pushed back by almost 11 months.
Originally scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027, the 24-team competition will now be held from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028. Saudi Arabia will continue to host the 19th edition of the tournament, with the revised dates subject to FIFA approval.

Why is AFC Asian Cup 2027 Postponed?
The decision from the apex body of Asian football has arrived amid escalating security concerns and instability in the Middle East.
In an official statement on November 3, the AFC confirmed that its organising committee had approved the rescheduling following consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and local organisers.
"The Organising Committee for AFC Asian Cup approved to reschedule the flagship national team tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions," the AFC stated.
It has come amid rising military tensions in the Middle East, with attacks on Saudi territory raising concerns over the safety of international teams, players, officials and travelling supporters. Recent attacks claimed by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement have reportedly affected critical infrastructure, including airports and energy facilities.
The AFC acknowledged the challenges involved in conducting a tournament of this magnitude under the prevailing circumstances. It added that the decision was taken after extensive consultations with the Saudi organisers.
The governing body also said it would work closely with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, the Local Organising Committee and other stakeholders to minimise the impact of the postponement.
Interestingly, the decision comes just eight days after the AFC finalised the tournament's match schedule on October 26, 2026. The original competition was scheduled to begin in Riyadh, with Jeddah and Al Khobar also hosting matches.
The 2027 edition will feature 24 national teams competing for the continental title. Saudi Arabia will host the Asian Cup for the first time, having previously hosted several major international football events.
The revised dates will now be submitted to FIFA for approval. The postponement is a significant development for Asian football, with participating nations required to adjust their preparation plans and international calendars ahead of the rescheduled tournament.
