Why Is Cristiano Ronaldo Not Nominated for Ballon d’Or 2026? The Reason behind Portugal Star's Snub
Cristiano Ronaldo has once again missed out on a place among the Ballon d'Or nominees, despite continuing to score goals for Al-Nassr and helping the Saudi Arabian club win the Saudi Pro League title.
The Portuguese superstar, who has won football's most prestigious individual award five times, was left out of the 30-player shortlist announced by France Football in September 2026.

The omission marks the fourth consecutive year Ronaldo has failed to make the shortlist. His last nomination came in 2022, before his departure from Manchester United and his subsequent move to Saudi Arabia. While his goal-scoring record remains impressive, his latest exclusion highlights the increasing importance of performances across elite European competitions and major international tournaments.
Who Are the Main Ballon d'Or 2026 Nominees?
The 2026 shortlist features several leading names, including Lionel Messi, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal, Jude Bellingham and defending winner Ousmane Dembele. The Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place today (Monday, October 26) in London.
Kane stands out after an exceptional season with Bayern Munich, while Haaland remains among the leading contenders because of his remarkable scoring numbers. Messi has also returned to the shortlist after missing out in the previous two editions, with his performances for Inter Miami and Argentina strengthening his case.
Other notable nominees include Vinicius Junior, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, Vitinha, Achraf Hakimi and Sadio Mane, Ronaldo's Al-Nassr teammate.
Why Was Cristiano Ronaldo Omitted Despite His Goals?
One of the biggest factors behind Ronaldo's absence is the competitive environment in which he plays. Although the 41-year-old continues to produce goals in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Pro League generally receives less recognition than Europe's leading leagues, particularly when voters assess performances against the strongest opposition.
The Ballon d'Or is not decided by goal totals alone. France Football's criteria consider individual performances, decisive contributions, team achievements and a player's overall conduct. Ronaldo's domestic success therefore did not automatically guarantee a nomination.
Did Portugal's World Cup Campaign Affect Ronaldo?
International performances also form part of the assessment. Ronaldo scored three goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but Portugal exited in the round of 16. By comparison, Messi helped Argentina reach the final, strengthening his own credentials. Ronaldo remains one of football's most prolific scorers, but another nomination will likely require outstanding individual numbers alongside significant achievements in major competitions.
