Why is Inter Miami in Trouble with MLS Investigation after Casemiro Transfer?

In a major coup for Major League Soccer, Inter Miami CF has officially welcomed Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro to South Florida, bolstering an already star-studded squad headlined by Lionel Messi.

The 34-year-old veteran, a five-time UEFA Champions League winner primarily with Real Madrid and a key figure for Brazil's national team, arrives as a free agent following four seasons at Manchester United. He made 91 appearances for Brazil and featured in all five of their matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, netting one goal.

Casemiro's contract runs through the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to extend through June 2029. The deal marks another high-profile addition for Inter Miami as they aim to build around their Argentine superstar and compete at the highest levels both domestically and in CONCACAF competitions.

Why is MLS Investigating Casemiro Deal?

However, the signing has not been without controversy. Casemiro's MLS discovery rights were originally held by the LA Galaxy, meaning Inter Miami was barred from direct negotiations under league rules. The two clubs ultimately reached a settlement to clear the path, but Major League Soccer continues to investigate allegations of tampering.

"The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete," MLS said in a statement.

"While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the Discovery Priority to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation."

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham expressed his excitement: "He is a winner who has achieved so much in the game and after such an incredible career with Real Madrid and Manchester United I'm delighted that he's decided to make Miami his next home."

The club noted that Casemiro is still awaiting the necessary visa and international clearance, leaving his debut date uncertain. In the meantime, the move reunites the tenacious midfielder with familiar faces in the league.

Inter Miami return to action soon in the MLS as they will take on Chicago Fire, but Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul both won't feature for them after their involvement in the FIFA World Cup.
