Revealed: Why Leny Yoro chose Manchester United over Real Madrid

Manchester United made a significant statement in the summer transfer window by signing Lille's highly-rated defender Leny Yoro for a deal worth up to €62 million.

The Red Devils secured the 18-year-old’s services after fending off fierce competition from European giants Real Madrid, who were also keen on the young talent.

Yoro, who was on the radar of several top clubs, had reportedly preferred a move to Real Madrid, especially after the Spanish giants’ recent Champions League triumph and the departure of their long-serving defender Nacho.

Real Madrid were in search of a new central defender to bolster their backline, and Yoro was seen as a promising addition. However, despite the prospect of joining one of the world’s most successful clubs, Yoro ultimately opted for Manchester United.

The main factor behind Yoro’s decision to choose United over Real Madrid has now been revealed to be financial. According to reports from Spanish media outlet Marca, Real Madrid offered Yoro a contract worth €2.5 million per season.

In contrast, Manchester United presented a much more lucrative offer, with a salary package of €9.5 million per season.

This substantial difference in wages played a crucial role in Yoro’s decision to move to Old Trafford.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, were not willing to spend excessively on a player who did not perfectly fit Carlo Ancelotti's team profile, especially after securing the signing of superstar Kylian Mbappe.

As a result, Madrid were outbid by United, whose financial power proved decisive in this transfer battle. The young defender showcased his quality during his debut in a friendly against Rangers, justifying United's significant investment.

However, Yoro’s momentum was halted by an unfortunate foot injury sustained during the same pre-season tour, which has now sidelined him for around three months. Despite this setback, Manchester United remain confident that Yoro will make a strong impact once he recovers.
