Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have long been at the heart of modern football's greatest individual rivalry. But while fans and pundits have spent over a decade debating who deserves the title of the GOAT, the Argentine legend has now shed light on his real relationship with his Portuguese counterpart.
Speaking to D Sports following Inter Miami's recent victory over Porto in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Messi was asked once again about his equation with Ronaldo. While the two titans of the game are often portrayed as fierce adversaries, Messi clarified that their rivalry was never personal.

"I hold a deep respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and everything he has achieved in his career, and continues to achieve, as he's still performing at an elite level," Messi said.
"Our rivalry was purely on the pitch, driven by our desire to give everything for our respective teams. Off the field, we're just ordinary people. While we're not friends in the traditional sense, as we don't socialize, there has always been mutual respect between us," he added.
The iconic Messi-Ronaldo rivalry took off during their time in Spain, where Messi ruled the roost at Barcelona and Ronaldo dazzled fans at Real Madrid. Their frequent on-field clashes between 2010 and 2018 were among the most watched and celebrated in world football.
However, the two went separate ways after their La Liga stints. Messi moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and later joined Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, a club co-owned by David Beckham. Meanwhile, Ronaldo took his talents to Juventus, then returned to Manchester United before eventually signing with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.
Today, the legendary duo are nearing the end of their glittering careers, playing on different continents but still performing at a high level. Despite the absence of a personal friendship, the mutual admiration remains - proving that respect, not rivalry, defines their legacy.
