Why Liverpool are so desperate to bring Michael Edwards back?

Liverpool are enjoying a fantastic season under Jurgen Klopp and have already won their first trophy of the season in the form of Carabao Cup beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final.

They are also competing on all fronts leading the Premier League table, having made the knockout stages of the Europa League and the quarter finals of the FA Cup. However, there is certainly a bit of anxiety among the fans with Jurgen Klopp having announced his decision to step down from the manager’s position at the end of the season.

Replacing someone like Klopp, who is one of the best managers in the world, will be a huge ask for Liverpool. The German has not only brought the club back to the top from a pretty troublesome situation over the course of his tenure at Anfield, he also embodies the spirit of the club and the fans perfectly. His departure could be a major setback for the club if they don’t make the right decisions and Liverpool are trying everything to ensure that they take the right calls.

As per reports, the Reds hierarchy are ready to make a desperate attempt to bring former sporting director Michael Edwards back to the club. Edwards served the club at different capacities for almost a decade before surprisingly leaving in 2021. During his time at the club, especially when he was the sporting director, he played a key role in ensuring that the Merseyside giants are moving in the right direction. Edwards is regarded as a maestro in the transfer market and his negotiating abilities caught the eye while he was in charge at Liverpool as their sporting director.

Edwards had the caliber of making the most of players who failed to shine at Liverpool such as Christian Benteke. He also helped the club’s finances by selling academy graduates for ridiculous fees and most of them have not been able to live up to those price tags. He also landed Liverpool plenty of bargains such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andrew Robertson and many more. Edwards also was one of the brains behind Liverpool moving to a new training ground where the first team and youth teams shared the same facilities which is bearing fruits now as Klopp is winning crucial games for fun with teenage prodigies.

Since leaving Liverpool, Edwards has worked in his own venture running a data analytics firm amd was initially thought to be against the idea of returning to Liverpool. However, it is now being reported that he is considering a return if he is given complete control of the club’s football operations.

With a new manager coming in the summer who will have massive shoes to fill, someone like Edwards helping him out could be the best first step Liverpool take in the right direction. Edwards is one of the vert best in the business and is still very young and can go on to become the best sporting director in the history of the game. With Xabi Alonso leading the race to replace Klopp, there is no denying the fact that the young duo of Alonso and Edwards could potentially take the club to even greater heights.
