Why Manchester United Could be Relegated to Conference League Despite Qualifying For Europa League With FA Cup Win?

Manchester United's participation in the Europa League next season is at risk following their FA Cup triumph, due to complications arising from INEOS' ownership of both Manchester United and French club Nice.

Manchester United secured their place in the Europa League by winning the FA Cup, despite finishing eighth in the Premier League and failing to qualify for Europe through league standings.

The FA Cup winner is granted a spot in the Europa League, ensuring the Old Trafford side's entry into Europe's secondary club competition.

The potential problem originates from INEOS' stakes in both Manchester United and Nice, which also qualified for the Europa League by finishing fifth in Ligue 1. UEFA's regulations prohibit clubs under the same ownership from competing in the same European competition, creating a conflict that needs a solution.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group acquired a 27.7% stake in Manchester United in December for over £1 billion, with plans to increase their stake to nearly 30% following a further £238 million investment. INEOS also own Nice, complicating the situation as both teams are set to compete in the Europa League.

If INEOS cannot resolve the conflict, one of their clubs could be relegated to the UEFA Conference League. Typically, Nice would retain their Europa League position due to their higher league finish compared to United's eighth place in the Premier League.

INEOS however remain hopeful for a resolution. In a statement recently, the British organization expressed confidence in finding a solution, mentioning ongoing direct dialogue with UEFA. They believe a resolution will be reached soon ahead of the upcoming season.

Missing out on the Europa League would be a significant financial setback for Manchester United, impacting their transfer plans for the summer. The club have already engaged in discussions with UEFA since Ratcliffe's investment, seeking commitments and potential solutions.

Additionally, INEOS are currently evaluating leadership for the next season, with Erik ten Hag's position as manager uncertain despite the FA Cup victory. The outcome of these discussions could influence both the club's European participation and managerial decisions.
