Why Manuel Ugarte Might Miss Out on His Manchester United Debut Against Southampton

Manchester United supporters may need to be patient as new midfield signing Manuel Ugarte is unlikely to make his debut in the upcoming Premier League clash against Southampton.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan international, who was unveiled to fans at Old Trafford during United's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, could face logistical and preparation challenges following his international duties.

Manuel Ugarte

Ugarte's move to Manchester United was confirmed just before the close of the summer transfer window, making him ineligible for the Liverpool fixture due to a lack of registration in time.

Soon after, the midfielder departed for international duty, representing Uruguay in two World Cup Qualifiers, where he delivered strong performances.

With United’s recent midfield struggles, particularly the disappointing display from Casemiro against Liverpool, many expected Ugarte to be a strong candidate for a starting role in the upcoming match at Southampton.

However, given his recent international commitments, fans may have to wait a little longer to see him in action.

The key concern revolves around Ugarte’s tight schedule and limited preparation time with the Manchester United squad.

Ugarte played for Uruguay against Venezuela on Tuesday night in a World Cup Qualifier. With an early Saturday afternoon kickoff against Southampton, Ugarte faces a quick turnaround of just 85 hours between his international appearance and the Premier League clash.

Also, Venezuela is six hours behind the UK, meaning Ugarte is unlikely to depart for Manchester until Wednesday morning. Even if he travels via private jet, the flight time is around 10 hours. Therefore, Ugarte will not be back until late Wednesday night.

As a result, the former PSG midfielder will only get Thursday and Friday to train with his new teammates and prepare for the game.

Given these circumstances, Erik ten Hag may be careful about rushing Ugarte into the starting lineup, especially with only one full day of training likely under his belt.

While Ugarte’s full fitness makes him an exciting prospect, it is more likely that he will be named on the bench for the Southampton fixture.
