Why will PSG need to pay €55 million to Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe?

In the latest chapter of the ongoing legal saga between Paris Saint-Germain and former star Kylian Mbappe, the French league’s appeals commission has upheld a previous ruling that requires PSG to pay €55 million in unpaid wages to the player.

This decision, which aligns with the earlier judgment by the LFP’s legal commission, places Mbappe in a favorable position as he continues to pursue what he claims are unpaid dues after his departure to Real Madrid.

Mbappe, who signed with Real Madrid as a free agent this past summer after seven years with PSG, filed the claim for €55 million based on what he describes as unpaid salary for the final three months at PSG, plus various performance bonuses.

The 2018 World Cup winner reportedly waived these amounts in August 2023, according to PSG. However, Mbappe’s camp asserts that no formal agreement was ever reached, and the owed amount remains outstanding.

While PSG have avenues for appeal, including recourse to the Higher Appeals Commission under the French Football Federation (FFF), the court rulings so far have consistently favored Mbappe.

Despite suggestions from an independent committee for the two parties to seek a mediated resolution, Mbappe’s representatives have firmly declined, stating that mediation is not an option, and reaffirming their demand for the full unpaid sum.

Legal experts suggest that without concrete evidence on PSG’s part to support their claim of a waiver, the case is likely to continue leaning in Mbappe’s favor. Still, the process may extend further if PSG chooses to pursue all appeals.

Meanwhile, Mbappe has settled well at Real Madrid, tallying eight goals and two assists across 13 appearances in all competitions as he adapts to life with his new team.

However, this dispute remains a highlight point as PSG and Mbappe continue their high-stakes financial standoff.
