Carlo Ancelotti, the celebrated Italian football manager and current head coach of Brazil's national team, has been sentenced to a one-year suspended prison term by a Madrid court for tax fraud stemming from his 2014 tenure at Real Madrid.
The court also imposed a €386,361 ($452,821) fine and a three-year ban on receiving public aid or subsidies.

The conviction relates to allegations that Ancelotti defrauded Spanish tax authorities of approximately €1 million ($1.25 million) by failing to declare 2014 image rights income. Prosecutors claimed he concealed these earnings through a Virgin Islands-based shell company lacking genuine economic activity.
Initially, the Madrid Prosecutor's Office sought a four-year, nine-month sentence and a €3.2 million fine for alleged fraud in 2014 and 2015. The court, however, cleared Ancelotti of 2015 charges, citing insufficient evidence of his tax residency in Spain after he moved to London following his Real Madrid dismissal.
At the April 2-3, 2025 trial, Ancelotti denied wrongdoing, stating he trusted Real Madrid's financial team and his tax advisors to handle his affairs. "Everything seemed correct to me," he testified, noting he repaid €1.5 million to authorities in December 2021, a mitigating factor in the sentencing.
The Italian's case aligns with other Spanish football tax fraud convictions, such as those of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who also received suspended sentences and fines but avoided incarceration. The ruling underscores Spain's strict stance on tax evasion in the sport, particularly concerning complex image rights arrangements. Aged 66, Ancelotti is one of football's most successful managers, boasting five UEFA Champions League titles across clubs like Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. Since May 2025, he has coached Brazil's national team, a role unaffected by the verdict.
Under Spanish law, which typically suspends sentences under two years for non-violent, first-time offenders, Ancelotti will not serve jail time. The former Real Madrid boss will evade prison if he pays the penalty. Messi and Ronaldo had similar accusations against them and the duo escaped any prison time by paying the penalty.
