Will Kylian Mbappe Play For Real Madrid In FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Quarter-Final Match?

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an update on Kylian Mbappe's availability ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The French forward, who missed all three group-stage games due to a stomach illness, made his return as a substitute in the 1-0 win over Juventus. However, Alonso has not yet confirmed if Mbappe will be fit to start the knockout clash.

"He's improving and we'll decide tomorrow morning whether he starts," Alonso said during the pre-match press conference. While Mbappe's fitness continues to improve, his return doesn't automatically rule out the inclusion of Gonzalo Garcia, the 21-year-old who has impressed with three goals in four appearances during the tournament. "They can play together. It depends on the moment and what the game requires - they complement each other well. I haven't ruled it out," Alonso added.

Alonso also mentioned he prefers to share tactical decisions with his players before making them public.

Brazilian forward Rodrygo has found it difficult to make an impact so far in the tournament, but Alonso remains confident in his mindset. "I spoke with him yesterday - he's got a positive mindset and is ready to step in when called upon," he stated.

Meanwhile, Turkish youngster Arda Guler has started to impress under Alonso's watch. After a quiet stint under Carlo Ancelotti last season, the midfielder has shown potential in recent outings. "It's time to invest in Arda's development," said Alonso. "We'll push him to grow and mature, knowing he'll make mistakes along the way, and we'll accept that."

Saturday's clash at MetLife Stadium is a rematch of the 2024 Champions League final, where Real Madrid defeated Dortmund 2-0. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac acknowledged Madrid's strength but believes familiarity with Alonso's tactics gives them hope. "You can see Bayer Leverkusen's DNA in this Madrid side," Kovac noted.

He added, "We want to stay here longer, and we believe we can advance."

With a semi-final spot on the line, Real Madrid are favourites, but Dortmund's resilience and knowledge of Alonso's style may set up an intense contest. Whether Mbappe starts or not could be a key factor in how the tie unfolds.
